Bob Holsworth on Why Bob McDonnell Will Be a Strong Candidate

Saturday, April 11, 2009

Virginia Commonwealth University Professor Bob Holsworth addresses Republican bloggers at Bill Bolling's "bloggers' day" in Richmond this past week. None of what Holsworth has to say here is particularly profound or earth shattering, but nonetheless I think it's worth sharing because it's a decent summary of why we Virginia Democrats shouldn't underestimate Bob McDonnell. As Holsworth says, McDonnell's got strong favorable ratings, he is generally considered to have done a good job as Attorney General, he's got good candidate skills and has improved as a stump speaker, and he doesn't have the Bush millstone around his neck as Jerry Kilgore did in 2005.

Having said all that, I strongly believe that if we have a dynamic, well-funded, positive candidate with a strong message (particularly on jobs and the economy), we've got a good shot of holding the governor's mansion. So let's see, which if the Democrats running for the nomination is the most dynamic, well-funded, positive, and has the strongest message about jobs and the economy? Here's a hint. :)
