American "Know Nothing": John Boehner

Monday, April 20, 2009

Let's take this one idiotic comment at a time by Rep. Boehner (R-Idiocracy).

1. "George, the idea that carbon dioxide is a carcinogen..."
First off, nobody ever said that CO2 was a carcinogen. Where on earth did THAT come from? That alone proves that John Boehner is an imbecile, but then it continues.

2. "...that it's harmful to our environment is almost comical."
Uh, "comical" as in "just about every climate scientist the world?" "Comical," as in the IPCC report of 2007, which found that "Warming of the climate system is unequivocal" and that "Most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations?" "Comical," as in "the Supreme Court of the United States," which ruled in April 2007 that the EPA had to deal with CO2 as part of the Clean Air Act. The Supreme court majority decision wrote that "[t]he harms associated with climate change are serious and well recognized" - for instance, "the global retreat of mountain glaciers, reduction in snow-cover extent, the earlier spring melting of rivers and lakes, [and] the accelerated rate of rise of sea levels during the 20th century relative to the past few thousand years..."

Yes, hilariously "comical," Congressman Boehner!

3. Every time we exhale, we exhale carbon dioxide.
Yes, that's true, but if the point here is to argue that CO2 emissions can't be harmful since they're "natural," that's just plain wrong. In sufficient quantities, just about anything can be harmful. For instance, water is normally harmless, but believe it or not you can die if you drink too much of it. You can also die from too much oxygen. And you can FEEL like you're going to die from listening to people like John Boehner for more than 10 seconds. Heh.

4. Every cow in the world, uh, well, you know when they do what they do, you've got more carbon dioxide.
Actually, no. When cows "do what they do," in other words "fart," they do not pass carbon dioxide, they pass METHANE. I'm sure John Boehner doesn't realize it, but methane is actually a far more potent greenhouse gas than CO2 (according to the EPA, "Methane is over 20 times more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide (CO2) over a 100-year period..."

Now, I don't expect our public officials to be Nobel Prize winning scientists. But I DO expect them to have a scientific IQ higher than a sea slug or a cow fart. Sad to say, but in John Boehner's case, the sea slugs and cow farts come out ahead.
