My Problem With Eric Cantor
Monday, April 20, 2009
This profile of Eric Cantor almost makes me like the guy. In fact, he DOES seem like a good guy with a sense of humor, humility, balance, and a wonderful family. So, what's my problem with Eric Cantor?
It's simple: Eric Cantor's on the wrong side on pretty much every single issue progressives care about, from embryonic stem cell research (zero rating from the Parkinsons Action Network in 2005), to the environment (zero rating from Environment America in 2008), to family and children issues (zero rating from Planned Parenthood in 2008, 20% rating from the Children's Defense Fund in 2007), to animal welfare issues (zero rating from the Humane Society in 2007-2008), to foreign policy (D- rating from Citizens for Global Solutions in 2008), to civil liberties (18% rating from the ACLU in 2007-2008), to education (zero rating from the National Education Association in 2007-2008), to labor issues (4% rating from the AFL-CIO in 2007), to...well, you get the idea.
Again, Eric Cantor does appear to be a smart, personable guy, but he's dead wrong on pretty much every single policy issue. And that's my problem with him - along with his oftentimes (unintentionally) hilarious, absurd defenses of said policy issues. I've also got a problem with the "company he keeps." In short, what's a nice Jewish guy like Eric Cantor doing in a screwed-up party like the one he's in now?
