Bob McDonnell has been trying to hammer Creigh Deeds for refusing to take clear stands some national issues. While I think Deeds campaign's responses could better connect with Obama progressives, Creigh shouldn't take firm stances on legislation that's still being molded.
But there's just one problem with this line of attack -- it's already backfiring. You see, Bob McDonnell only wants to take stands on a few issues that play well with his conservative base.
This week, Politico asked McDonnell whether he supported the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court. Ben Smith generously called his answer "noncommittal." I'll save you the trouble of reading the rambling, 130 word response and summarize it here:
Duck! Dodge! Hide!Like many Republicans, McDonnell is caught between the American people's clear support for Judge Sotomayor and the national party's desire to turn her nomination into a showcase for intolerance.
Meanwhile, Creigh gave Politico a clear, direct honest answer:
"Judge Sotomayor has clearly demonstrated that she has the experience, judgment and temperament to contribute to the integrity of the Supreme Court," said Deeds in a statement. "This historic nomination is a testament to the opportunity of America and should be celebrated.”I don't have my Flipcam handy, but here's my advice for the McDonnell campaign: If you don't want to take clear stands on national issues, don't try to go after your opponent on national issues.
