Community organizers in Michael Vick’s Virginia hometown are preparing a “celebration” for the former NFL quarterback.Yes, the guy's a good football player, but does that excuse vicious animal abuse (and other criminality)? Is that the type of thing a community wants to "enjoy and embrace?" Something's seriously, horribly wrong with the value system there, that's all I can say.
Andrew Shannon, who is president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference chapter in Vick’s hometown of Newport News, says the event is scheduled for Aug. 8. Vick will be in attendance and is scheduled to speak at the event, which Shannon says is geared toward promoting the doctrine of nonviolence.
One of the organizers, resident John Eley, says the “Michael Vick Community Celebration” is intended to give the city a chance to “enjoy and embrace” Vick.
P.S. It pains me to use that photo, which I find stomach-churningly revolting, but in this context, I want people to remember what Michael Vick did to these poor animals. And no, being able to throw a football really well doesn't excuse it. Sure, now that he's done his time, let the guy play football again, but "celebrate" him in any way, shape or form? I don't think so.
UPDATE: Here are a few comments from the USA Today story on this.
"I wonder if they will stage a dog fight in his honor?"
"Shortly after the "celebration" for Michael Vick...the town's mayor will be celebrating his rather abrupt retirement from politics."
"And Newport News, Va has gotten the first franchise in the new Dog Fighting League."
"While you're there make sure you stop by the dog killing booth at the carnival...for three shots for only $5. Proceeds to go to the ASPCA."
"If Vick had any kind of character, he would thank the city for its intentions but refuse to take part. Maybe he could have them use the day to provide a celebration of some poor kids. For him to participate as if he was some kind of a hero or role model is insane."
"the only thing worse than Vick is those that would honor him"
There are a lot nastier comments on there, but let's just say, this "celebration" isn't exactly doing wonders for Newport News' image...
