From the Raising Kaine Archives: 8/19-8/21

Friday, August 21, 2009

As part of our continuing series, here are a few interesting articles from around this date in Virginia political history, courtesy of the Raising Kaine archives.

8/19/05: Who Will Save Us from George Allen? (Interesting, no mention at all of either Jim Webb or Harris Miller at that point...)

8/21/05: Republicans Attack Faith-Based Group ("The Washington Post reports on a grassroots, overwhelmingly faith-based group called "Project Hope and Harmony" which was running the Herndon day laborer center and which was under attack by Republicans like Jerry Kilgore.)

8/19/06: Webb vs. Allen Now on the "Radar Screen" (According to Charlie Cook, quoted in today's Washington Post, this week's George Allen "macaca" incident - using a blatantly racist word, bullying a young Indian-American man, inciting an all-white crowd against him - has vaulted the Virginia Senate race onto "Democrats' radar screen[s].")

8/20/06: Tim Kaine Talks About the "Real Virginia" at the Fiesta Politica in Arlington ("Kaine received a huge round of applause and cheers - he had to stop his speech for about 30 seconds or so - when he referenced the diverse Arlington crowd and declared, forcefully, 'THIS is the real Virginia.'")

8/20/07: Cranwell: Democrats Could Take Both House and Senate in November (According to Cranwell, we'll take back the State Senate. Cranwell adds, "I think the House is a more difficult task, but based on the numbers I've seen, I don't think it is completely out of the realm of possibility that we could get to 50-50 in the House. All the stars and all the planets are going to have to line up.")

8/21/08: Barack Obama Slams McCain in Chester, VA (Ahhh...those were the days! :))
