Bill Clinton Responds to "Don't Ask Don't Tell" Question

Friday, August 14, 2009

Three points here.

1. I can't stand rude "screamers," whether they're right-wingnuts at health care townhall meetings or left wingers at Netroots Nation.

2. I pretty much agree with Bill Clinton's version of history here:
It's not like the 1990's, you want to talk about "don't ask don't tell," I'll tell you exactly what happened. You couldn't deliver me any support in the Congress, and they voted by a veto-proof majority in both houses against my attempt to let gays serve in the military. And the media supported them, they raised all kinds of devilment, and all most of you did was to attack me instead of getting me some support in the Congress, now that's the truth...It's true.
Clinton also points out that Congress was going to "reverse any attempt I made by executive order to force them to accept gays in the military." In the end, Clinton declares, DADT has failed, public opinion has shifted, and "this policy should be changed."

3. I couldn't agree more that this policy needs to go. It's stupid, cruel, immoral, harmful, and completely without merit. I'm sorry, but if gays can serve in the Israeli and British militaries without "destroying morale" or whatever, there's no reason they can't serve in the United States of America. End of story.
