"When you have too much money, you waste it"

Thursday, April 16, 2009

This quote by Brian Moran, who had no signs at yesterday's Shad Planking (while Terry McAuliffe had 25,000, almost all of which will be re-used), is both whiny and funny at the same time.
"We are not spending the money on those signs," Moran said. "I mean, it goes to show when you have too much money, you waste it."
OK, Brian, you want to talk about "waste" of money? Let's look at the "burn rates" for the first quarter of 2009 from the Virginia statewide campaigns.

First, let's note that Brian Moran is spending 93% of the money he's raising. That's right, 93 cents of every dollar is going out the door. Where's all that money going? Well, $377,200 of it went "salary," "consulting fees," "website services" and "management fees." That's 50% of Brian Moran's expenditures going to personnel. That's amazing. As one high-ranking Democrat commented to me, "It's like they're running a f***ing Ponzi scheme over there."

In sharp contrast, Creigh Deeds and Terry McAuliffe spent just 44% and 59% of every dollar they raised in 1Q09, respectively. Actually, the most "wasteful" candidates in 1Q09 were Republicans Dave Foster (171%), Ken Cuccinelli (169%), John Brownlee (108%) and Bill Bolling (94%). The least "wasteful" statewide candidate in 1Q09 was Mike Signer, at 29%.
