PPP: McDonnell 51%-Deeds 37%

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

For now, I'm just posting the top line numbers (+14 points for Bob McDonnell) from PPP. I'll have further analysis in a few minutes.

"Bob McDonnell has opened up a 51-37 lead over Creigh Deeds in the race to be Virginia's next Governor, up from a 49-43 advantage four weeks ago."

UPDATE: Other findings:

*McDonnell is +28 favorable (54/26) while Deeds is +11 (43/32).
*McDonnell has 94% of Republicans, while Deeds has only 80% of Democrats.
*McDonnell leads by 19 points (52/33) among independents.
*"The biggest problem hampering Deeds right now is a lack of enthusiasm among Democrats for coming out to vote this fall"
*SurveyUSA's finding about the shape of the Virginia electorate is confirmed by PPP: "those planning to vote in this year's election report having voted for John McCain by a margin of 52-41."
*One bright sign for Deeds: he "has a 64-3 lead with blacks and seems likely to pick up most of the undecideds as the election comes closer."
*Deeds "has to run against both Bob McDonnell and the national political climate."
*Bill Bolling is up 14 points (48/34) on Jody Wagner.
*Ken Cuccinelli is up 13 points (45/32) on Steve Shannon.
*81% say they are "solidly committed to [their] current choice for Governor," while 19% "could change mind."

P.S. PPP says that it "will release full numbers looking at Barack Obama and Tim Kaine's approval ratings, as well as Virginians' perceptions about whether Obama was born in the United States, tomorrow."
