Mark Warner: "How can we afford reform & control costs?" How About a Public Option?!?

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

I still didn't hear the words "public option," which is one of the best - if not the best ways to "drive down health care costs" (by providing a strong competitor to the private insurance companies, among other things). Also, I've got to say with all due respect to Senator Warner, this framing is not right at all, focusing only on "the cost of this reform" as opposed to focusing on what the current system is costing us now and also what the cost of doing nothing will be to our nation. Am I missing something here? Having said all that, I totally agree with Senator Warner that we need to change the way we have our financial incentives in the health care system. I also agree that we need to focus on "quality not quantity," on health care outcomes and not on the volume of procedures doctors and hospitals perform. In short, I agree with Mark Warner on a bunch of stuff when it comes to health care, I just wish he'd fully support a public option and start focusing more on the cost of doing nothing than on the "cost of this reform."
