In a conference call today, Gov. Tim Kaine called a new attack ad by Attorney General candidate Ken Cuccinelli "false" and "desperate." The Governor debunked several of the ad's claims about Virginia's response to the public safety problems posed by the Supreme Court's Melendez-Diaz decision this summer.Of course, Cooch is the same person who denies the overwhelming scientific evidence of global warming, who believes the government is going to track his kids through their Social Security numbers, and that he can speak to a toy elephant. What else would you expect from him than "completely false" ads?
Kaine said his first reaction to Cuccinelli's ad was, "Do you want an Attorney General who makes stuff up? Because that's basically what this ad does."
"It's true that Ken Cuccinelli issued a press release," Kaine said. "But folks can do things other than press releases. We heard from Steve Shannon numerous times, and he played a critical role in discussions on how to make the fix. His prosecutorial background was critical as we worked with prosecutors to find solutions that worked.
"Ken's claims about Steve's role in the Melendez-Diaz situation are 100 percent and completely false. This is a sign that this is the kind of campaign that's getting desperate, if they're making claims like this."
"As a former criminal prosecutor, I have seen families torn apart by drunk driving accidents and I have helped convict hundred of individuals who put lives at risk by getting behind the wheel drunk," Shannon said. "There is nothing I take more seriously than keeping Virginians safe and that is why I urged the Governor to solve this issue quickly, either through a special session or by making administrative changes to our criminal justice system.
"Unfortunately, my opponent is clearly more interested in using public safety as a political football in his attack ads than in actually keeping Virginians safe."
