Signer Campaign Issues Statement on Ballot Access

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

I just received this statement from the Signer campaign:
Mike's campaign for Lieutenant Governor has broad support among Democratic Party officials, activists, and donors, and he is running an energized, grassroots campaign.

On the basis of this broad enthusiasm among the primary electorate, on March 26, Mike Signer's campaign turned in 13,354 signatures to get on the ballot -- over 30% more signatures than required by state law and well over the required 400 per Congressional District. Certain ballot pages contained a technical error by a notary public which did not affect the validity of the signatures and which unfortunately escaped the attention of campaign staffers. Virginia state law gives the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) complete discretion and authority to certify candidates under the Party's own criteria. The State Board of Elections has counseled the DPVA that such harmless, administrative errors by notaries are not to be held against the voter who has signed a petition page, or the candidate. The DPVA properly concluded that Mike Signer, along with two other candidates, should be certified for the ballot.

Mike regrets that this notary's error was not identified by campaign staffers and regrets the inconvenience the error caused to DPVA staffers and officials. He looks forward to a spirited primary election on June 9.
