Candidate Mailers: Of Union Bugs and Recycling Symbols

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

I'm sitting here looking at a pile of mailers from various Democratic candidates - for governor, for lieutenant governor, for the 47th House of Delegates district. What I see is mailers of varying sizes, shapes, colors, etc. But what I almost always see is a "union bug," indicating that the mailer was printed by a union shop. I also frequently - but not always - see some sort of recycling symbol, indicating that the candidate actually cares about the environment (aside from just saying he or she cares). Here's a quick survey:

Governor
Brian Moran: Two mailers, both with "union bugs," but neither recycled. Wait, I thought Brian was supposed to be the environmentalist candidate in this race? Something about "walking the talk" springs to mind...
Creigh Deeds: One mailer, has a "union bug" but no recycling symbol. Hmmmm.
Terry McAuliffe: Three mailers, all with "union bug" and recycling symbol. Kudos to Terry for putting his money where his mouth is on both labor and environment.

Lieutenant Governor
Jon Bowerbank: One mailer, with "union bug" and recycling symbol (plus "printed with soy ink"). I'd say "go Jon!" except that he's no longer a candidate. :)
Jody Wagner: Three mailers, all with "union bug" but no recycling symbol. Hmmm.
Mike Signer: I can't find any mailers by Mike at the moment, but I'll keep looking. UPDATE - I just talked to Mike's campaign manager. The deal is that Mike's signs are both recycled AND union bug. The campaign's business cards, letterhead and mail are ALL union bug, with one exception: the "newspaper" they just sent out, which they tried to find a union printer to print but couldn't...ended up going with a local newspaper to print the "newspaper".

47th House District
Miles Grant: Two mailers, both with "union bug" and recycling symbols. Nice job by the "Green Miles!" :)
Adam Parkhomenko: Two mailers, both with "union bug" and recycling symbols. Also nice job by my friend Adam! :)
Andres Tobar: One mailer with a "union bug" but no recycling symbol. Hmmmmm.
Alan Howze: One mailer with a "union bug" but no recycling symbol. Wait, wasn't Howze "co-endorsed" by the Sierra Club? Very confusing.
Patrick Hope: I've scanned his mailer, which you can view here and here. Note no sign of EITHER a "union bug" OR a recycling symbol. What the you-know-what? Why would Patrick Hope, running for delegate in a strongly pro-labor, pro-environment district, not use union printers or recycled materials for his mailers? I'd love to hear his explanation, but then again, Hope is the candidate endorsed by George Allen Republican Scott McCaffrey (of the Arlington Sun Gazette), and also the only candidate who favors widening I-66 (for a "bus lane," he says). Not exactly the way to win an election in the liberal 47th district.
