Just Say The Words, Eric Cantor: "We're Hypocrites"

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Eric Cantor can dodge and weave all he likes with regard to Mark Sanford and other Republican "family values" paragons who "stray." Cantor certainly does his damndest in this video to distract public attention from what's really going on here with his "neither party has a monopoly on this kind of thing" b.s. The fact is, though, as pointed out to Cantor in this interview, "the one distinction is, for political power the Republican Party in recent years has utilized family values as a mechanism to accumulate power, they have represented themselves as that higher standard." I'd add "gay bashing" to that list, as well as a general meddling in peoples' private lives, "sticking their noses in our bedrooms" so to speak.

As Jim Webb said in 2006, the government has no business coming in our front doors unless there's an "overriding reason to do so." Unfortunately, today's Republicans like Mark Sanford (and Bob McDonnell) have completely abandoned the Republican Party's bygone social libertarian attitude and have gone over 100% to the Pat Robertson/"family values" position. Thus, when the holier-than-thou Sanfords and Ensigns and Craigs and Vitters and etc., etc. of the world get caught with their pants down (or in a "wide stance" or with a diaper on), the issue isn't what they do with another consenting adult, the issue is that these same people are busy in their capacities as public officials pushing legislation that intrudes on personal privacy, that harms sexual minorities, and that invades everyone's personal privacy. Why should we not call Republican moralists on their hypocrisy? As Bob McDonnell might say, "I can't recall." Heh.
