Same Sex Marriage Coming to DC, Unfortunately Not to Virginia Anytime Soon

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Excellent news from Washington, DC, at least for anyone who cares about equal rights for all Americans.
The D.C. Council voted Tuesday to legalize same-sex marriage in the District, as the city moves quickly to join five states in allowing gay couples to marry.

After months of debate, the council passed the bill 11 to 2. It still must take a second vote in two weeks before the measure can go to Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D), who has said he will sign it.

If the bill survives a required congressional review period, the District will join New Hampshire, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and Massachusetts in allowing same-sex marriage.
So, great news in D.C., and kudos to the D.C. Council - with the exception of homophobic jerks like Marion Barry - for taking this step. Unfortunately, right across the river from DC, there's another jurisdiction where gays and lesbians are prohibited by virtue of a constitutional amendment (no less) from having the same rights as all other Americans. Sadly, that's not going to change until we stop electing crazy Republicans like Bob Marshall, Ken Kookinelli, and Pat Robertson's Manchurian Candidate to office here in the Commonwealth. Yes, elections do have consequences, and they do affect real peoples' lives - for better or for worse - everyday. On November 3, we made a huge mistake here in Virginia, but fortunately, there's another election in 2 years and we'll have a chance to fix that. Let's make sure we don't screw that one up.
