Tim Kaine on MSNBC; Open Election Thread #2

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

"These are uphill races...we had underdog candidates."
"The president's very popular in Virginia...Virginia voters approve of Mark Warner, Jim Webb and me."

Well, alrighty then.

Anyway, feel free to use this as an open thread (part 2) on today's election(s). Thanks.

UPDATE 1:25 pm: From 10th CD Democratic candidate Rich Anthony, "It looks like turnout in Sully is light to moderate. I'm hoping we reach 45% turnout, but I'm not holding my breath."

UPDATE 1:39 pm: I'm a bit skeptical of this, so take it with as big a grain of salt as you'd like, but it's from an excellent source. They got exit poll results from a precinct in Arlington that went 60%+ for Kaine in '05. With around 250 voters sampled over a 5-hour period this morning, McDonnell is up 22 points on Creigh Deeds. WTF? I mean, if that's even CLOSE to being true, it's horrible. Also, even if it gets better through the day, we're talking about possible margins in Arlington of less than 60% possible for Deeds. For comparison purposes, Tim Kaine got 74% of the vote in Arlington in 2005.

UPDATE 2:52 pm: Dan Kalbacher tweets, "A very reliable source on the ground in Lancaster County just informed me that Crabill's crazies are coming out in droves! Uh oh...." Also, cvilletomorrow tweets, "At 1PM Albemarle Co. is at 25.9% voter turnout & City of Charlottesville reports 18.6%."

UPDATE 3:06 pm: Report from Nottoway precinct in Fairfax County - at 3 pm, about 1,000 people had voted. Expectations were around 1,800 would turn out; last year, about 2,400 voted in Nottoway (1,370 Obama-1,008 McCain)

UPDATE 3:23 pm: Kip Malinosky tweets, "679 votes in Fillmore little more than half 05." That's not good at all in deep blue Arlington County...

UPDATE 3:24 pm: James Walkinshaw tweets, "Good Hispanic turnout at Merrifield. Each I've talked to voting straight Dem. NOVA Repubs anti-immigrant crusade is bad policy and politics." Interesting.

UPDATE 3:41 pm: BwanaVA tweets, "My wife just voted at Burke Commons precinct ffx county-she was #1084...For perspective, Burke Commons (Burke Centre) has 4182 registered voters."

UPDATE 4:23 pm: Brian Devine tweets, "748 now at lyon park arlington - need 900s before we hit 30%." SatirclAlxndria tweets, "Alexandria precincts turnout running on par w/ 2005 so far; evening turnout will decide."

UPDATE 5:03 pm: Under two hours to go, Ryan Nobles tweets that "the eagle" (aka, Ben Tribbett, aka NLS) "has landed" in Richmond, and cvilletomorrow tweets that "At 4PM Albemarle Co. is at 34.6% voter turnout & City of Charlottesville reports 28.42%." If you haven't voted (Democratic) yet, please do!

UPDATE 5:34 pm: I'm hearing that exit polls are looking like the margin in the governor's race is headed to high single digits. I hope that's true, as it could save a few borderline House of Delegates candidates. Go vote!

UPDATE 5:44 pm: I hear that turnout is very high in McNair precinct (Fairfax County), which would be good new for Stevens Miller. I also hear that the Miller campaign has been driving people to the polls all day so hopefully all that hard work will pay off.

UPDATE 5:49 pm: ABC News reports more exit poll information. More here.

UPDATE 6:23 pm: Not Larry Sabato tweets, "The angry conservatives have voted and things are moderating. Problem is it is awfully late in the day."

UPDATE 6:25 pm: Chris Cillizza writes that "the most striking thing to us in the data" from the early exit polls is that "a majority of voters in both states said that President Barack Obama was not a factor in their vote". So much for that theory.

UPDATE 6:31 pm: Greg Priddy emails after voting at Wilson precinct in Arlington, "Voted at 6:20 PM - turnout was just a few shy of 1,000 at this heavily Democratic precinct. Pretty strong after-work crowd. Better than I expected. One Democratic volunteer there, but a larger number of Republicans in the area, working both Wilson Elementary and the Rosslyn firehouse precinct next door."
