Cantor: Stem cell funding "distracting ourselves from the economy"

Sunday, March 8, 2009

Quoth Eric Cantor:
First of all, there’s a reason why [the stem cell research] discussion is coming up this week. Why are we going and distracting ourselves from the economy? This is job No. 1, let’s focus on what needs to be done. But as far as the issue of stem cell research, I don't know anyone who's not supportive of that. What we're talking about here, though, is embryonic stem cell research, and the question of federal funding of that. And frankly, federal funding of embryonic stem cell research can bring on embryo harvesting, perhaps even human cloning...Let’s take care of business first; people are out of jobs. And again, there is a reason why all of this is happening right now.
What the hell? Lifting Bush's foolish limits on federal funding for life-saving embryonic stem cell research is a distraction from the economy? We can't walk and chew gum at the same time (in this case, the "walk" will take up a miniscule amount of President Obama's time while potentially saving millions of lives). As usual, I am sitting here scratching my head and asking, "what on earth is Eric Cantor talking about?!?"
