Why Wise and Not Surry?

Friday, March 20, 2009

Why would a candidate vote to support (and apparently continue to support) the Wise County coal-fired power plant but oppose the possible Surry County coal-fired power plant? At first glance, it seems odd. But think about it a minute. What does that sign say at the Wise County plant? That's right, Dominion (aka, "Global Warming Starts Here"). Hmmm....so, which candidate has taken $46,800 from Dominion since 1996? Yep, this one. And which candidate has said he won't take a dime from Dominion Power? That's right, this one.

Meanwhile, what about the Surry County coal-fired power plant, which this candidate says he opposes (and which this candidate says says "does not meet [the] standard" for being built)? Well, Surry is NOT a Dominion power plant. Instead, this plant is being proposed by the Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC), "a regional, consumer-owned power supplier formed in 1948 to provide power to a consortium of electric distribution cooperatives." ODEC is also "not-for-profit" and "member-owned." Quite a difference from Dominion.

So, back to my original question, and to make it a bit clearer: why is Brian Moran supporting Dominion/Wise but opposing ODEC/Surry? Hmmmmm.
