Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, September 29. As for the clip of Trevor Noah's kickoff as host of The Daily Show, pretty good so far, great line comparing right wingers who think Boehner isn't conservative enough to "crack telling meth that it's not addictive enough." LOL *Donald Trump's tax plan is all talk ("His tax plan, far from being a courageous departure from Republican orthodoxy, relies on many familiar Republican tricks to justify massive tax cuts in an age in which the government's burdens are increasing, not shrinking - and with even less than usual honest arithmetic." Pathetic as always from sideshow freak Donald Trump.) *Obama and Putin outline competing visions on Syria *Carly Fiorina is more dangerous than Donald Trump: Her brazen demagoguery puts his to shame ("The surging contender's breathtaking facility with lying makes Trump look like an amateur") *Carly Fiorina's ultraconservative rage ("How angry is Carly Fiorina? So angry she can't see straight. That's the only explanation for the yawning gulf between what she says and the plainly visible facts." Dave Brat's Facebook page: In 2010, just months before the election that would ultimately give them control of the House, John Boehner and Eric Cantor drafted the Pledge to America, the Republican plan for reining in government. Included in the pledge, were the following:- A promise to require that any new federal regulation adding to the deficit would require congressional approval; - A promise to repeal small business mandates in the new health care law AND repeal and replace the health care law in its entirety; - A promise to roll back non-discretionary spending to 2008 levels; - A promise to establish strict budget caps to limit federal spending going forward; - A promise to require that every bill introduced in the House have a citation of constitutional authority; - A promise to give members at least three days to read bills before a vote. The American people liked what they heard, gave Republicans the majority in the House -- and then everything changed. How many of these promises has the leadership fulfilled? Now these same promises have somehow become "unrealistic." It is a strange world we live in when members are called "false prophets" for trying to keep the promises that were made by their own leadership. The American people are tired of the same old games, and want to see real, authentic effort to change the status quo. Effort when it matters, not just for show. That means a Congress fighting hard on the issues that matter to everyday Americans, not just on issues that matter to K Street. But, time after time since 2010, leadership has made up excuse after excuse and squandered opportunities to keep the promises that were made when campaigning for votes. Leadership has repeatedly turned its back on the people, the Constitution and the rule of law by refusing to use the biggest means at its disposal -- the constitutional power of the purse --- to fight illegal actions of the president and this administration. Arlington's Elected Leaders on School, County Boards and in Richmond Support Katie Cristol for Arlington County Board (0.00 / 0) [delete comment] From Katie Cristol's County Board campaign: Tuesday, September 29th, 2015Arlington, VA - Twenty elected officials, comprising all of Arlington's School Board, Constitutional Officers and Richmond delegation, and much of the County Board, today endorsed Katie Cristol's campaign for Arlington County Board. Citing Cristol's policy background, community experience and new perspective, Arlington's longstanding leaders are supporting her bid for one of two open seats on the County Board this year. All five of Arlington's current School Board members, including Chair Emma Violand-Sánchez, Vice Chair Nancy Van Doren, Barbara Kanninen, James Lander and Abby Raphael have endorsed Cristol for her commitment to education and the Arlington Public Schools. School Board Chair Emma Violand-Sánchez said, "As an educator and advocate for more than three decades in Arlington, I know how important it is to have County Board members committed to the success of all our children. Four of Arlington's current County Board members, including Libby Garvey, Jay Fisette, Chair Mary Hynes and Vice Chair J. Walter Tejada, have also shared their support for Cristol. In a statement, County Board member Libby Garvey noted, "Katie Cristol will bring new energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to listen to Arlington voters. Katie works with school districts, states, philanthropies, and nonprofits to tackle strategic planning and implementation challenges-skills that would be a great asset to the County Board." In addition, all of Arlington's five Constitutional Officers, including Treasurer Carla de la Pava, Commissioner of Revenue Ingrid Morroy, Sheriff Beth Arthur, Clerk of the Court Paul Ferguson and Commonwealth's Attorney Theo Stamos, are endorsing Cristol's campaign. "Katie will be an excellent addition to the County Board. She combines progressive Arlington values with new insights and perspectives. I know that she is committed to hearing from all parts of the Arlington community and will be uniquely responsive to neighborhood issues on the Board," said Commonwealth's Attorney Theo Stamos this week. Arlington's State Senators and Delegates are also backing Cristol, citing the valuable partnership she will offer for their work in Richmond. "I enthusiastically endorse Katie Cristol for the Arlington County Board," said Senator Barbara Favola of the 31st District. "Katie knows our values and knows how to translate those values into policy.  I need a strong partner like Katie in local government to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed.  Katie will work to create a bright future for all Arlingtonians." Senator Favola is joined in her support of the Cristol campaign by Senator Adam Ebbin of the 30th District, Senator Janet Howell of the 32nd District, Delegate Patrick Hope of the 47th District, Delegate Rip Sullivan of the 48th District and Delegate Alfonso Lopez of the 49th District.
