Sunday News: GOP Now Run by "Extremists, Authoritarians; VA Elections "All About Mobilizing "Base"

Sunday, September 27, 2015

Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Sunday, September 27.*In Philadelphia, pope challenges Americans to live up to their ideals
*Congressional agenda in disarray with Boehner's departure
*Week of tumult within GOP signals change, but to what?
*Fiorina's falsehoods ("Ms. Fiorina may have deeply felt objections to abortion. That doesn't excuse her use of mistruths to justify her willingness to shut down the government, which by the way she seems to consider no big deal.")
*John Boehner May Have Been The Only Thing Standing Between America And Madness
*It is time to get very afraid: Extremists, authoritarians now run the GOP - and no one can stop them ("Boehner and McConnell weren't conservative enough for them. Nor Eric Cantor. Right-wing purists won't stop here")
*Carly Fiorina Ambushed By Planned Parenthood Supporters At Tailgating Party
*Bernie Sanders' secret advantage: How dominating Facebook could help him overcome Hillary Clinton's financial juggernaut
*Schapiro: Local elections an exercise in national politics ("But will that coalition be there for McAuliffe on Nov. 3? Virginia's legislative elections, much like those for statewide and national office, now come down to mobilizing a clearly identified base of reliable Democratic or Republican voters rather than stitching together a disparate array of supporters willing to put policy or personality ahead of party.")
*Virginia and Cuba discuss expanding trade beyond agriculture
*Joe Stanley makes his return to politics, this time for a presidential election
*Rasoul: Who is to blame? Personal responsibility vs. systemic flaws
*Fairfax police investigating officer's use of stun gun
*Power line across the James River: An intrusive eyesore or electrical necessity? (Not until Dominion has maxed out energy efficiency improvements, which it isn't even CLOSE to doing, and also encourages distributed power, such as community and rooftop solar, which it aslo hasn't done.)
*Shaping downtown Norfolk's future
*D.C. area forecast: Showers continue to threaten, but may remain elusive

Boehner also says right wingers are "absolutely...unrealistic." "This whole idea that we're going to shut down the government to shut down the government in 2013...was a fool's errand." Boehner says he holds to his remark calling Ted Cruz a "jackass."

Other points:*The power of money over the political process is "horrendous."
*The "earth created by god cannot be destroyed by greed"
*Responds to "JEB" Bush's "free stuff" comments, saying Bush wants "massive tax breaks for the richest people in this country while he will fight to cut Social Security and Medicare and programs that tens of millions of elderly people and middle class people and working class people depend upon."
*We're going to ask the wealthiest people in this country to pay substantially more in taxes.
*Says he respects and admires Hillary Clinton, will not going to start attacking her, has "never run a negative political ad in my life."
*Has a feeling there will be more Democratic debates, would like to see more.

Video: Chuck Todd wastes lots of time with Hillary Clinton on email non-story (0.00 / 0[delete comment]
What a silly interview, the first 11 minutes out of 15 minutes all on emails (zzzzzz) and polling, nothing on content - Clinton's energy plan, her differences with "JEB" and other Republicans on many other important issues, etc.  It just amazes me that this is what corporate media figures like Chuck Todd believes to be important. As for the last 4 minutes, I agree with Hillary Clinton that people SHOULD constantly reevaluate their positions based on new/better data, information, etc. Where I don't agree with Hillary Clinton is on things like Keystone XL, where we had more than enough information years ago to know that: a) climate change was real; b) it was manmade; c) tar sands were filthy dirty; and d) Keystone would encourage the production of said filthy-dirty tar sands. As for marriage equality, I understand what it's like to have grown up at a time when gay marriage wasn't even talked about as a serious possibility, and I'm fine with people "evolving" in that regard. However, I DO think that many progressives find Bernie Sanders appealing because he's supported marriage equality for years, even when it wasn't popular to do so...

Video: State of the Union interview with Martin O'Malley (0.00 / 0[delete comment]
I'm putting this up in part because I met O'Malley's southern states director yesterday and had an interesting discussion with him. Also, I continue to be a bit baffled as to why O'Malley hasn't been getting a more serious look from progressives, since clearly he was a strong progressive and environmentalist as Governor of Maryland. Also, I agree with O'Malley that we should have more debates so we can talk about other things than the Clinton email story.
