Monday, September 28, 2015

Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Monday, September 28. Also see President Obama's speech at the closing session of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals.

*Shell Halts Alaska Offshore Exploration After Failing to Find Enough Oil ("Royal Dutch Shell Plc will halt exploration in the U.S. Arctic after $7 billion of spending ended with a well off Alaska that failed to find any meaningful quantities of oil or natural gas." Good!)
*U.N. General Assembly to Open With Focus on Syria, ISIS and Refugees
*Republican hard-liners are 'false prophets,' Boehner says
*John Boehner's Move Deepens a Republican Chasm
*Boehner climbs off the tiger
*Top donors warn Jeb Bush: It's make or break time (LOL)
*Pope Francis: I Understand Anger of Catholic Church Sex-Abuse Victims
*Carly Fiorina defends Bush-era torture and spying (Sorry, but anyone who defends torturing people should be automatically disqualified from holding office in America. And anyone who participated in it in any way should be facing serious charges in a court of law.)
*It's make or break time for Jeb Bush
*NBC/WSJ Poll: Trump and Carson Lead GOP; Clinton Loses Ground (Just think about that: carnival barker Donald Trump and extremist/bigot Ben Carson are #1 and #2 among Republican primary voters. What does that say about their party?)
*Trevor Noah gives Fox News a free pass: The new "Daily Show" could be great for Ailes and Hannity, bad for America ("Trevor Noah debuts tonight, but already there are ominous signs about his approach with this essential institution")
*Donald Trump is a Modern-Day George Wallace ("Donald Trump is a scaremonger. And he's bringing the most hateful strains of American politics back to life.")
*Texas gives Virginia lethal drug for execution next week (Ugh.)
*Cuba-Virginia meetings seek to expand post-thaw trade opportunities
*Political stakes high for McAuliffe in November ("If he's successful, McAuliffe will have greater political clout and have more deal-making cachet with the Republican-dominated House of Delegates during the last two years of his term. If he loses, McAuliffe could look politically weak at a particularly awkward time, just as his friend Hillary Rodham Clinton seeks the White House and will likely need swing-state Virginia to win.")
*Metro's forbidding future (Metro needs reform and also a lot more resources.)
*Editorial: Voters lose out when candidate debates are nixed ("House Speaker Bill Howell, a Stafford County Republican, also has turned down the UMW request to take part in the forum. He is opposed by Kandy Hilliard, a Democrat and former Stafford County supervisor.")
*Harper-Papelbon brawl transforms Nationals' wake into a public viewing (Suspend Papelbon immediately, then dump him if at all possible.)
*D.C. area forecast: An unsettled week that starts like summer and ends like fall

Statement: Christian Dorsey "honored to have the support of all five members of the Arlington County Board, including John Vihstadt" (0.00 / 0[delete comment]

I may write more on this later, but for now just wanted to post the press release from the Dorsey campaign. I'm glad to see Dorsey endorsed by the four Democratic members of the County Board of course, but as for faux-"independent" John Vihstadt (R)...again, I've got to run now but may write more later.
DORSEY STATEMENT ON VIHSTADT ENDORSEMENTArlington, VA-- Today, John Vihstadt, an Independent member of the Arlington County Board, endorsed Christian Dorsey for one of two open seats. Vihstadt was elected twice in 2014 in an April Special Election and a November General Election.
"I am honored to have the support of all five members of the Arlington County Board, including John Vihstadt," said Dorsey. "Since he was elected last April, John has been diligent in ensuring community leaders and stakeholders have meaningful input in the County decision-making process, and has, with the support of other Board members, worked to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars by creating a performance auditor position. These are all initiatives that are important to Arlington, and that I've been talking about throughout this campaign."
"This is a critical election for the future of Arlington County," continued Dorsey, "and I am proud to have John's support. I am equally proud to have the support of other elected officials, community leaders, empowerment groups and professional organizations who have endorsed my candidacy and who believe, as I do, that Katie Cristol also should be elected to the County Board."
"It is gratifying to have John recognize my longtime civic engagement in the County, including my work on the Planning and Tenant-Landlord Commissions, and my service on the boards of some of our terrific community organizations like A-SPAN and the Arlington Free Clinic. This experience demonstrates my ability to work constructively with others even when not agreeing on every issue."
"I ask voters to give me an opportunity to work on the Board with Mr. Vihstadt, and I also ask them to join me in selecting Ms. Cristol whose perspectives, policy expertise, and communication skills will make her the ideal partner on the County Board."

Governor McAuliffe Announces Permit for 80 Megawatt Solar Facility in Accomack County (0.00 / 0[delete comment]

Nice start...now on to several hundred megawatts more! :)
~ Virginia will be home to the largest solar facility in the Mid-Atlantic and the second largest solar facility on the East Coast ~MELFA - Governor Terry McAuliffe today announced that the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality is issuing the first Permit By Rule for an 80 megawatt solar facility that will be constructed in northern Accomack County. This project will more than quadruple the amount of solar energy currently installed in the Commonwealth.
Community Energy is the developer and owner of the solar facility. Community has partnered with Amazon Web Services in a long-term power purchase agreement that enables the project to be built.  The power from the Amazon Solar Farm US East will be delivered into the electrical grids that supply Amazon Web Services' data center activities, including those located in Northern Virginia.
"The partnership between Community Energy and Amazon Web Services, which will result in the largest solar facility in the mid-Atlantic, is indicative of the types of opportunities that my Administration is working toward through our commitment to build a new Virginia economy," said Governor McAuliffe.  "The solar energy industry holds tremendous potential for economic growth in Virginia in the coming years, and I look forward to bringing more projects like this to the Commonwealth."
"This solar project is a first for Virginia and a giant step forward for clean power on the East Coast," said Brent Alderfer, President of Community Energy.  "With this project, Virginia jumps to the lead in attracting the energy industry of the future, with cloud-technology leader Amazon Web Services as the first customer."
"Amazon Web Services is pleased to be teaming up with Community Energy on Amazon Solar Farm US East," said Shannon Kellogg, Director of Public Policy for Amazon. "We are excited about the impact that this project can have on the environment and the local economy in Virginia, and we thank the Governor for his strong commitment to make more renewable energy sources available in the Commonwealth."
The permit for the solar facility was issued at Eastern Shore Community College, demonstrating the nexus between innovative opportunities in the energy sector and Governor McAuliffe's workforce development priority to addresses employment gaps in emerging industries.
