New nominee for Weakest Candidate Defense Ever via a letter to the editor in today's Arlington Sun Gazette:
But if we must talk about Bob McDonnell on women, then let’s talk about the fact that he has a daughter who proudly served in Iraq, that his former campaign manager was a working mom, and that, in his position as attorney general, he appointed women, some of them working moms, to several key positions.
You hear that, women of Virginia? If you're qualified for a job, Bob McDonnell won't refuse to hire you. In fact, his employees in the past were not 100% male. Also, Bob McDonnell is not afraid to admit that he has a daughter. He's practically Gloria Steinem!

As Lowell detailed in his book, Netroots Rising, it wasn't just the Macaca Moment that derailed George Allen -- it was his campaign's drawn-out, bungled response. Given today's "defense" and the McDonnell campaign's head-scratching attempt over the weekend to draw attention to his attacks on single moms, I wonder how much extra juice these stories are getting from McDonnell supporters' own flubbery.
