Deeds Raised Nearly Twice as Much as McDonnell in June; Trails in CoH

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

From a a tweet by Jared Leoopold of the Deeds campaign about 20 minutes ago:

"Deeds nearly doubles McDonnell's fundraising for quarter. McDonnell CoH stays stagnant."

According to The Hotline, Deeds raised $3.4 million in between May 28 and June 30 compared to Bob McDonnell's $1.8 million. On the less-positive side, The Hotline reports that McDonnell has "almost $5M on hand...nearly double the amount reported by Dem state Sen. Creigh Deeds' team." Of course, this is largely a result of Bob McDonnell not having just come through an expensive primary. In addition, The Hotline points out that "Nat'l parties will dump big $ in VA, so warchests don't mean much." On the other hand, The Hotline tweets, "McD had 1K more donors than Deeds, could be important."

My bottom line here? Deeds did better than McDonnell in June in terms of money, but this is going to be a tough race on all fronts, including fundraising. I also tend to agree with Patrick Ruffini that "In the modern campaign, early money and establishment support matters far, far less than it used to, and could actually turn out to be a handicap -- particularly when money becomes the story."
