Mary Lee Cerillo: Photos and Report from Stevens Miller Event

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Earlier this evening, there was a reception with Governor Kaine for Democratic House of Delegates candidate Stevens Miller at Jimmy's Old Tavern, Historic Downtown Herndon. The following report and photos from the event - including festivities inside and right-wing protestors outside - is from Sully District (Fairfax County) Democratic Committee Chairman Mary Lee Cerillo.
I was impressed by the huge turnout in Herndon this evening for Stevens Miller who is running for delegate in the 86th District. I was also impressed by Jimmy of Jimmy's Old Town Tavern who graciously let the Democrats use his tavern for their fundraiser in spite of some kickback from some of the residents in Herndon. Please get out there Democrats and pay a visit to his restaurant......I've heard he has delicious crab soup on a Friday night. We all need to support this establishment and make sure he gets a boatload of business. Get out to Herndon. While you're at it you can do some canvassing and phone banking for Stevens Miller.

In attendance were State Senator Janet Howell of Reston, Delegate Ken Plum, FCDC Chairperson Mary Ann Hovis, John Faust Surpervisor of Dranesville District and several other dignitaries including our own Governor Tim Kaine. Governor Kaine praised Stevens Miller's service in local government in Loudoun County which he feels will be an important asset in Richmond. There was a lot of enthusiasm with chants of "Yes We Can" which was reminiscent of the excitement we all felt this time last year. We knew we could win in Virginia for Barack Obama and we can win this fall in November. Virginia is no longer a RED state as we saw in 2008. It was wonderful to be with like minded people from both Fairfax County and Loudoun County. Kim, a resident of Herndon, with a beautiful voice sang "God Bless America" to start off the event. It is wonderful to be associated with so many patriotic people who love their country.

It was sad to see the few protesters who showed up across the street from Jimmy's Old Town Tavern. This included two councilmen who serve on the Herndon town council. I wish the town of Herndon could be better represented where all their constituents are considered and not just a small group of people. Perhaps this will change in the near future. Tonight I felt proud to be a Democrat in Virginia and an American citizen. YES WE CAN.
