Buying Native Virginia Plants

Saturday, May 23, 2009

I just got back from a really cool garden center that specializes in native Virginia plants. It's called Nature By Design and is located in Alexandria, just off Route 1, north of Old Town, and south of Potomac Yard. My wife and I ended up buying two plants, and American Elderberry and an Eastern Redbud, both at very reasonable prices. Why buy native Virginia trees, shrubs, etc? There are many reasons, including:
*Reduce maintenance
*Protect our precious Chesapeake Bay watershed
*Replace vanishing wildlife habitat, and
*Transform your yard into a sanctuary of breathtaking beauty
Or, to put it another way:
By rethinking the role of the urban or suburban yard - selecting low-maintenance, environmentally responsible plants and other materials, and placing them with care, we can all enjoy the benefits of sustainable landscaping on the largest and smallest properties. These include reduced resource requirements, a positive environmental impact, and, best of all, a garden that gives back more than it demands. These are the ingredients of a lasting garden - one that will be enjoyed by your grandchildren's generation and beyond. Can you think of any better legacy to leave them?
Good question.

P.S. The people at Nature By Design are very friendly and helpful, just in case you don't know exactly what you should get, how to plant it, etc.
