Video: Arlington County Board Member Mary Hynes Says Farewell to ACDC
Wednesday, February 4, 2015
From a bit earlier this evening at the Arlington County Democratic Committee (ACDC) meeting -- County Board member Mary Hynes says farewell to ACDC (and receives not one but two standing ovations) after announcing earlier in the day that she will not be seeking reelection this year. Later in the meeting, ACDC Chair Kip Malinosky proposed the method of nomination be a primary in early June, and there was no objection (at least not vocally -- I know of several people, myself included, who would have preferred a way to use Instant Runoff Voting, which because this is Virginia, for some idiotic reason we can't use in a primary...argh). How many candidates will run for the two openings (Hynes and Walter Tejada are both stepping down at the end of their terms this year) on the Arlington County Board? Stay tuned...could be a big field!
The purpose of Blue Virginia is to cover Virginia politics from a progressive and Democratic perspective. This is a group blog, founded by me (Lowell Feld), but now including several other progressive writers. I can't speak for the other "front pagers," but I consider myself a progressive in the tradition of Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, JFK, RFK and actually a bunch of progressive Republicans (e.g., Jacob Javits, Lowell Weicker). As such, I believe in expanding opportunities to all, utilizing government as a tool to promote the general welfare and the common good, protecting the environment for ourselves and for future generations, and expanding the rights promised in our Constitution and Bill of Rights to all Americans.
I invite everyone to comment here, but please be aware that profanity, personal attacks, bigotry, and "trolling" are not allowed. Thanks, and enjoy!
