The Virginia Education Association has endorsed Tom Shields in his race for the House of Delegates against John O'Bannon. The organization, which represents teachers throughout the 73rd District, cited Tom's understanding that quality public education is crucial to the future of our economy as the reason for their endorsement.UPDATE: Jody Wagner tweets, "I am pleased, this morning, to receive the endorsement of the Virginia Education Association!"
"Tom actually listens to the concerns of parents about their children's education as he knocks on doors across the 73rd," said Jennifer Andrews, President of the Henrico County Education Association. "Tom understands that education is the key to producing citizens who are engaged in democracy and that the state budget should not be balanced on the backs of schools."
"As the Director of the Center for Leadership in Education at the University of Richmond and as the son of two teachers, I'm proud to get the endorsement of the Virginia Education Association," said Tom Shields. "It's time we build a new generation of independent leadership that fights for real solutions to improve our education system instead of simply balancing the budget by short-changing our children's futures. I look forward to having a robust debate with John O'Bannon on the challenges facing our public schools, and I plan on holding him accountable for his votes to defund education by over $1/2 billion dollars."
