Arlington County Fair Photos, Political Report

Saturday, August 22, 2009

I just got back from the soggy-but-still-fun Arlington County fair. Given the rain, most people were hanging out indoors, including at the Arlington County Democratic Committee booth, which is where I took these pictures. I had the chance to speak with 47th House of Delegates district Democratic nominee Patrick Hope as well as Republican candidate Eric Brescia. I've got to say, it's not often (ever, really) these days that you meet a socially liberal or even moderate Virginia Republican, but Brescia definitely comes across that way in person and on his website (e.g., for "equal rights for all Virginians, regardless of sexual orientation", for "policies which treat immigrants with respect and dignity", for decoupling Dominion Power). What next, Ken Cuccinelli for gay marriage? Bob McDonnell for the public option? Bill Bolling for cap and trade? Hahahahaha.

Other than that, I spoke with former 50-state organizer Joe Montano, now working for the Deeds campaign, and he was optimistic (as he always is) about the Democrats' chances this November. Joe believes that Democrats will start tuning in after Labor Day and that enthusiasm will start to pick up significantly at that point. Joe also believes that the differences between Creigh Deeds and Bob McDonnell will become clear, and that this will work strongly in favor of Deeds in NOVA and elsewhere. I hope he's right! :)

P.S. No, I didn't ever get a chance to try Miles' much-touted deep-fried Oreos. I'm not sure if I'm upset about that or not. LOL

UPDATE: I also talked to the "Green Girlfriend," as Miles calls Lauren Uranga. I should do a poll on this, "Would you like being called the 'Green Girlfriend,' 'Green Boyfriend,' 'Green Wife' or 'Green Husband?' :)
