LeMunyon Attacks His Own Position on Transportation Taxes?

In a case of confusion with his own positions, Jim LeMunyon attacked Chuck Caputo for supporting a position with which Mr. LeMunyon agrees.

A recent mailer by Mr. LeMunyon attacks Delegate Caputo for voting to create a dedicated, sustainable revenue stream for transportation in Northern Virginia. But in a recent article in the Fairfax Times and just last week at the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum, LeMunyon claimed that he wanted to raise the gasoline tax by indexing it to inflation. Indexing the gasoline tax to inflation would effectively place tax increases in Virginia on auto-pilot. Furthermore, indexing the gas tax to inflation would increase the gas tax from 17.5 cents in 1986 to 33 cents in 2009, according to the Consumer Price Index.

"Jim LeMunyon is either confused about his position, does not understand transportation funding issues, or wants to pull the wool over the eyes of voters," said Caputo campaign manager Max Glass. "Chuck Caputo has debated Jim LeMunyon but it appears Mr. LeMunyon's biggest debate is with himself."

Now personally, I'm all for increasing the gas tax to what it should have been if it had been indexed to inflation in 1986 - 33 cents per gallon. However, I'm surprised to hear the Republican candidate advocating this, albeit while contradicting his own (laudable) position by attacking Chuck Caputo for voting to create a dedicated, sustainable revenue stream for transportation in Northern Virginia. Got that? :)

Maybe LeMunyon Should Write for The Onion?

Over in the 67th House of Delegates district, Del. Chuck Caputo's (D) opponent, Jim LeMunyon, is providing some (apparently) unintentional hilarity. For starters, LeMunyon - a run-of-the-mill hardcore, conservative Republican - is laughably attempting to pull a Bob McDonnell and pass himself off to voters as a "moderate." Yeah, right, uh huh. In addition, LeMunyon has some rather...amusing, I guess...ideas about public education, such as allowing Fairfax County schools to have open enrollment, which would let students from other counties attend Fairfax schools. Here's what the Caputo campaign believes that would look like (click to "embiggen").

Looks like fun, no? :)

On yet another humorous note, what's the deal with LeMunyon publishing the details of transportation projects from around the 67th district (e.g., widening of Stringfellow Road) in his newsletter ("The LeMunyon Momentum" - ha, try saying that 10 times fast!), when these are all projects that Chuck Caputo helped make happen? Is LeMunyon really trying to take credit for the projects or does he simply not understand what being a delegate means. Either way, LeMunyon's demonstrating that he's more qualified to write for The Onion than to run for Virginia's House of Delegates. LeMunyon's a talented satirist, even if he doesn't realize he's doing it. :)
