Sonia Sotomayor Nominated to Supreme Court

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

According to George Stephanopolous, a "Supreme Court announcement between 10 and 1030 this am." What I want is a super-qualified, young, strong progressive who will be on the court for decades to come. All else being equal in terms of qualifications, I also want a diverse pick - in this case, it almost certainly will be a woman and possibly a Latina; in the future, I'd like to see diverse picks in every way, including sexuality. No matter what, I want someone who can go toe-to-toe intellectually, rhetorically, and in every other way with Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito, John Roberts and Clarence Thomas. And then I want 3 or 4 more picks like that over the next 8 years. Is that too much to ask? :)

UPDATE: It's Sonia Sotomayor. Great pick!

UPDATE #2: Sotomayor is 54 years old, has a law degree from Yale University, and is a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Interestingly, she was nominated to the in 1991 by George HW Bush to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, then by Bill Clinton to her current position.

UPDATE #3: It will be interesting to see if Republicans attack a Latina woman, thereby alienating even further two crucial groups - Latinos and women - who they've been busy pissing off the past decade or so...

UPDATE #4: Well, it sure didn't take long for conservatives to fire away at this eminently qualified Hispanic woman. Hey, Republicans, enjoy being a minority party for the next generation or two! :)

UPDATE #5: Tim Kaine reacts to Sotomayor pick.
